I Am Missing You Today

Ama, you taught us from

Vedas and Guru Granth Sahib

Quoting verses of unity and brotherhood

We were told God is surrounding us so

Never do wrong to others

I heard stories of the partition when

You came holding your children with Baba

From Pakistan to India as refugees

But you never complained

And became the sole strength for our family

Baba left us too early,

But I grew up in your arms

You poured your spirituality into me

Ama I am torn today!

As I hear the stories of racism and enmity increasing

Killing and looking down upon other souls

Dominant races denying all truths,

Narrowing down the vision of vast Universe

You showed me India as the land of Rishi Muni

Pious Ganges and Yamuna’s shores

Himalaya’s height to aim for our characters

And depths of Indian Oceans to own

Broadened vision and accepting all

Hindus, Muslims, Christians, rich or small

Love for God and love for all

Ama I am missing you today…

Whether in paintings or sculptures, the faceless figures in my work represent the universal oneness of all humanity. My calligraphic work attempts to celebrate the same message of universality spread through verses in Arabic calligraphy and in the poetry of Rumi. Read More
