Seven Sufi Teachings to Light Your Way

The Sufis say that the reason of the whole creation is that the perfect Being wished to know Himself, and did so by awakening the love of His nature and creating out of it His object of love, which is beauty. Dervishes, with this meaning, salute each other by saying, ‘Ishq Allah Ma’bud Allah’ – ‘God is love and God is the beloved’. – Volume V, Love, Human and Divine, p144

Seven Sufi Teachings to Light Your Way

Ghost Ship Warehouse Fire in Oakland

I am reminded of my mother’s words today as I am reading again the details and reactions on Oakland Ghost Ship warehouse fire about ten days back. It is hurting true. But my mother said, when my young brother and her youngest son died in motor bike accident instantly and the whole family was in tears, uncontrollable sobs and shock,
“God has taken him in His peaceful abode because he could not have been able to suffer more pain of this life so don’t cry and just pray with me.” And she continued reading her holy book Geeta until preparations were being made for pyre and the last rites.
She had amazing strength and I draw from her strength and want to add these lines today to console all of us.
Don’t think the thirty six young creative people are dead
And their souls are searching
Roaming around in pain….
Don’t think the sudden and instant death killed all their dreams
As you will live their dreams now
Don’t think they cried and suffered as fire arose
They were shocked may be but released of all fears and pain instantly
Sudden death is sometimes blessing in disguise for the dead
And teaches a lesson to all living ones…
Take heed from such incidents take care of your precious gift this life
Adorn it with love, forgiveness acceptance and compassion for each other.
As we have none in the end
In disasters or pain
Except each other….

The Soul that Moves the Body of the World

The Soul that Moves the Body of the World

~ An excerpt from a talk given by Shaikh Kabir at the
Lincoln Memorial, Washington, D.C., October 8th, 2016

You who are relatively conscious, relatively compassionate human beings have an awesome responsibility. Whether you believe in God or not, whether you believe in an eternal soul or not, whether you are totally secular, religious, or spiritual, there must be something you hold sacred, something before which you feel humble, something you want to serve or honor. You may call it wisdom or truth, you may call it God’s law, you may call it enlightenment. Whatever it is, align yourself with that truth, with that presence, with that higher consciousness. It is in that presence that we will find the clarity, guidance, and courage we need. Ask for the guidance and inspiration that can be found deep in the human heart, and when we have found that, each of us must also become effective, committed activists working for justice and truth, putting our lives on the line.

Instead of trillions of dollars being spent on senseless, unwinnable wars, we could work toward a foreign policy based on magnanimity and compassion. We could create a global Marshal Plan and put the resources of war toward bringing clean water to the planet, toward ending hunger, toward increasing the bonds of friendship with other nations instead of threatening them.

Sacred activism is the bridge between the invisible and visible worlds, between the world of possibilities and the everyday world we live in. If we are going to bridge these two, we need to connect through our own deepest being, through our inner presence, our spiritual heart. We can do that right now, fulfilling the purpose of our being here together today.

Poem ” Bani Adam” from Saadi Shirazi

A simpler translation that I like:
The sons of Adam are limbs of each other,
Having been created of one essence.
When the calamity of time affects one limb
The other limbs cannot remain at rest.
If you have no sympathy for the troubles of others,
You are unworthy to be called by the name of a Human.

The Circle

It is all about the circle!
Everything begins and ends here
Learn to live within it
As it contains the sea of knowledge within
Day engulfs night and night releases the day!
Sorrow ends where the joy begins!
Life ends where death takes over
Fall ends when spring spurts
You begin at the point and end there!
Be conscious of the Divine light spreading from the center
That shows you clearly that you are not alone abroad
Flow with other species holding each other
Collaborate, share and rejoice together
Circle is the story of the Universe

Poem – Do not give up O human kind

In Primordial Time:

The Story goes like this..

We were together in Primordial times

We knew each other as one humanity

We prostrated together in front of One God

Our faces shining like mirrors with God’s image in them

We proclaimed together Him as our God

Then one day….

He chose Adam and Eve among us to go forth on the earth first

Here the versions may vary that it was a curse or God’s decree

But one after another we were sent from our God’s presence

To different parts of this earth in multitudes

With different colored skins, languages and attitudes

For us He showered millions of blessings on us

We forgot each other and got involved with ourselves,

Our children, our homes, our gardens of fruits and flowers

Our possessions, our dreams and everything our “own” and “own” and “own”

Lost connection with each other due to increased distance in land and

But here is the good news!

We are together in contemporary global world again!

Your smile brings joy in my heart; your tears tear my heart

I can see you and you can see me in the cyber space

We are connected again now though we were always connected from the roots.

In Primordial Time:

Even the most submissive Angels raised voice against God’s decision

When He proclaimed that Adam, His beautiful new creation

Will be sent to the earth as His representative, a vicegerent!

Seeing angels ‘anxiety He said “I know that which you know not”

I have blessed Adam with wisdom and insight,

Knowledge, responsibility and Divine light…

Now bow down in front of My vicegerent

As I know that which you know not…

Contemporary time:

Though Adam and his progeny is blessed with wisdom and valor,

And they have used their blessings and gained more

But it seems they have also proved the doubt of Angels as truth

By killing each other and creating havoc on this earth

The Divine light within is dimmed under the heavy shadows of “Self”

Some of us seeing the blood around and chaotic conditions endless

Cry and complain to God like the confused angels once did

Why did he create this devil along with human kind

He still smiles and says “I know that which you know not”

When the hidden light will shine through accumulated evil layers

You will see the beauty of human form, heart, mind and soul

Do not give up O human kind!

Find your way to peace, love and eternal joy through patience and prayers…
